Dr. Ito earned her bachelor’s degree from Barnard College, Columbia University in 1993. She ran a successful massage therapy practice in Birmingham, Alabama for four years. Her clients’ frequent inquiries about natural and holistic approaches to their health concerns fueled her growing curiousity about alternative medicine. In researching how she could offer more to her clients, she read the Principles of Naturopathic Medicine. These principles were so inspiring and so well described her own growing beliefs that within a few months she was back in school. After two years of pre-med college courses and then four years of naturopathic medical school, she graduated from Bastyr University and returned to her childhood home of Raleigh, NC. Because North Carolina does not yet license naturopathic physicians, Dr. Ito holds a naturopathic physicians’ license from Washington State. She is a member of the AANP and the NCANP.
Your first appointment will involve a brief physical exam, a review of your health history, and a comprehensive discussion of your chief complaint i.e. your primary health concern or goal that brought you to the clinic. In addition it may include a 20-30 minute health-promoting natural therapy like constitutional hydrotherapy, massage, or some therapeutic exercise. I will research your case and come up with an individualized treatment options. A day or two later we will discuss your options and finalize your treatment plan together(about 30 minutes). Subsequent visits will monitor progress, modify the plan if needed, repeat therapies, or address additional concerns or treat new acute problems (15-45 minutes).
For another comprehensive description of the patient’s experience with a naturopath, read this excellent article from the Journal of Family Practice.
The cost of your visit depends on the amount of time spent in the consultation. The fee is based on a rate of $120 per hour. A 90 minute visit would cost $180; a 20 minute visit would cost $40. The rate for students, teachers, and retired persons is 85$ per hour. Herbs and supplements are, of course, extra.
Extended phone consultations are also charged based on time. Of course there is no charge for calls to schedule appointments, to clarify treatments, discuss adverse reactions, order refills, or any calls under ten minutes.
What are the accepted forms of payment? Cash, checks, and all major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express) are accepted.
What about insurance? Until the licensing laws are changed in this state, insurance companies will not reimburse for services rendered by naturopathic physicians. However you may have success with your flexible savings or health savings account. Check with your plan administrator. I want to be sure that you have access to care and so I offer a sliding scale for patients unable to pay my usual rate.
